Achieving the highest possible tier a full year ahead of the traditional Year 11 schedule is no small feat. It takes more than just memorizing the periodic table or regurgitating Newton’s laws. We sat down to dissect the exact strategy, routine, and mindset that fueled this massive academic win.
Sri KL is known for its rigorous academic environment and excellent tracking of student progress. The secret wasn't fighting the fast pace, but leaning into it.
Pre-Learning Content: By the time the teacher introduced a topic in class (say, Stoichiometry or Electromagnetism), our ace had already skimmed the chapter over the weekend. Class time wasn’t used for introduction; it was used for clarification.
Leveraging School Resources: Sri KL’s science labs and structured topical tests were treated as actual exam checkpoints. Every internal milestone was treated with the same weight as the final board exam.
Many students fall into the trap of re-reading textbooks and highlighting pages until they turn neon. Our star student ditched the highlighters for a more aggressive approach: Active Recall and Spaced Repetition.
The Physics Approach: Instead of memorizing formulas, they focused on deriving them and understanding the core concepts. If you understand the relationship between force, mass, and acceleration ($F = ma$), you don't need to memorize three different variations of the formula.
The Chemistry Approach: Chemistry requires a balance of logic and brute memorization (like color changes in qualitative analysis or organic chemistry pathways). The student used flashcards to drill transition metal characteristics and reactivity series until they became second nature.
Scoring Paper 6 (Practical): Scoring for this paper requires a deep understanding and analytical knowhow of common experiments conducted in Physics and Chemistry subject. This require the student to apply methodical technique in developing a hypothesis and formulating a solution to test the hypothesis.
Doing past papers is standard advice, but how you do them makes all the difference. To secure an A*, the strategy shifted from just finishing papers to ruthlessly analyzing mistakes.

The Error Journal: Every single marks-loss was recorded in a dedicated notebook. If a mark was lost in a Physics Paper 4 because of missing units (e.g., forgetting to write Joules or Watts), or in Chemistry because of a vague keyword (e.g., saying "the precipitate dissolved" instead of "a colorless solution formed"), it went into the journal.
The Examiners' Reports: Before the exams, the student read the Cambridge Examiners' Reports. These documents explicitly state what examiners hate seeing (like messy graphs or lack of working steps). Avoiding common student pitfalls practically guaranteed those top-tier marks.
Perhaps the biggest differentiator was mindset. It is easy for a Year 10 student to say, "I have another year, I can slack off." By treating the Year 10 extended curriculum with the urgency of a final-year student, the pressure was evenly distributed. When exam day arrived, there was no panic—just execution. The exam room felt exactly like the Sri KL classrooms they had been practicing in for months.
An A* in IGCSE Physics and Chemistry isn’t reserved for prodigies. It belongs to the students who are organized, who actively test themselves, and who treat the marking scheme like a holy text.
